Supporters were shown short clips of rugby action from a series of Aviva Premiership Rugby matches from the season. At a given point, just prior to a refereeing decision being made, the TV screen froze the action and three options flashed on the screen with viewers given a three second count down to make their decision.
Participants, on average over the three hours the hub was running, got 40% of the decisions wrong and 60% of the decisions right. The interactive hub aims to provide entertainment whilst raising both an understanding and knowledge of what the referee goes through every week, having to make split second decisions.
Mark McCafferty, Chief Executive of Premiership Rugby, said "The 'You're The Ref' hub was incredibly popular on Saturday with supporters, players, coaches, referees, minis and juniors all coming down to test their knowledge of the laws of the game. It is not always an easy job to be a referee and this interactive game, while demonstrating that, is fast, fun and engaging and is a great educational tool."
Andy Challis, Brand Manager at Gilbert, said: "By delivering instant, on-the-spot, pressure to make a decision the RefZone Hub really did help the many who tried it understand the level of skill and dedication it takes to referee at the top level. With Gilbert's support we are sure that the Ref Zone will continue to be a great benefit to the game."
Rowly Williams, Technical Director of TheRefZone.co.uk , said: "Saturday was a great opportunity to show everyone at the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final what is just one part of the valuable on-going development for referees we provide and also showed there was an appetite for this to grow even more as part of the match day experience"
